1. Keep it simple. Don’t complicate unnecessarily. Don’t put too many things. Give preference to what is essential.
2. Write for yourself. Whatever be the key to success, the key to failure is to write verses in a way assuming people would appreciate it.
3. Let your readers feel comfortable reading your stuff. Don’t let them get intimidated fearing your words are too complex for them. Respect their time as well as viewpoint.
4. When people appreciate an article it means they were able to relate to it in some way. It could be characters, story, or writing style. You don’t have to worry if you feel you did a great job but it did not translate into the kind of response you were looking for.
5. Don’t attempt to tell a classic with the intent of fetching awards. Just tell the way you are most comfortable with.
6. Your best articles can be your worst enemies. Avoid repeating tried-and-tested stuff as in “oh I did this back then and it worked so I must repeat that here as well”. What’s the fun of traversing a path if you are solely focused on the destination rather than looking at the ongoing events?
“You want to know how to paint a perfect painting? It’s easy. Make yourself perfect and then just paint naturally.” – Robert Pirsig.
“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards” — Steve Jobs
