Just because you’re good at something, doesn’t mean you should startup in that direction.
One of the few skills I have is social media. I have managed Facebook and Instagram pages for brands, done campaigns, have hands-on experience with content marketing, did some sales, know about SEO, etc.
1.4 years ago, I made plans to start a social media company. I knew where I would get initial projects from. I could do some tasks myself and also hire people on it. My estimate was to be profitable in minimum six months, maximum twelve months. I had self-belief that I’ll succeed at it.
In fact I asked some people who knew me and they too felt this was something I could do with relative ease.
So, why didn’t I start my own social media company, when it was something I could do well?
The answer: Because if it was the last day of my life, I wouldn’t want to do it.
I am not saying that social media marketing is something that shouldn’t be done. It is just that I have some long-term goals and it doesn’t go with that. Today, if I go full-time into it, then tomorrow I’ll want to do something else. Then, I’ll likely put most of the company in hands of the team, and gradually lose interest.
If there’s something else that I want to do, then why not do it now itself?
Life is too short to spend time on things that don’t make you happy. Money is important, so is your own health. If you’re enjoying what you’re doing, and working hard at it, then this is what matters.
I will be happy doing things that justify my education and experience. I have masters in software, having been taught by some good teachers. I should therefore do work in that direction. I don’t want to compete with anyone other than myself. I know I won’t achieve my potential better, by doing social media things.
So how will I achieve my potential better? This is for me to think and decide.
